PROJECTS

THE ROHINGYA MISSION

NOV 2017

The Rohingya known as the world’s  most persecuted minority, are a majority Muslim ethnic group who live in the state of Rakhine of Buddhist Myanmar for centuries. Despite this, they have been denied citizenship in Myanmar since 1982. Rakhine, is one of the poorest states in the country, with poor sanitation, education, healthcare and a lack of basic services. They have restricted rights to study, work travel, marry, practice their religion  and access health services. The Rohingya are not allowed to leave Rakhine without the permission of the government. Decades of reported violence, rape, torture, murder and arson have forced the Rohingya to flee to neighbouring countries, like Bangladesh by land or by boat.

More than 600,00 Rohingya have been forced to flee to Bangladesh since August 2017, majority of them being women and children. They have been walking through jungles, mountains and rivers to escape the persecution and to reach safety.  They is an urgent requirement for relief for the thousands that are arriving.

Iqbal Ahmed has now visited the most heavily affected areas of Bangladesh on 2 occasions to offer his own personal relief and support. He was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of Rohingya suffering without basic needs such as shelter, clean water and basic sanitation. The journey to Bangladesh, have left many in poor health, especially the elderly and young children. Many women are pregnant  with no medical attention, prone to infection. These conditions are not safe or acceptable.
